P.A. Pride returns after year’s absence; a week full of virtual and drive-in events on tap

Jun 18, 2021 | 12:19 PM

After a year’s absence for obvious reasons, Prince Albert Pride Week is a go starting on Saturday.

There will be seven events spread out throughout the seven days and can be enjoyed by everybody from the LGBTQIA2S+ community and its allies from either the safety of their own home or vehicle.

“I think it’s a fabulous thing. Again, we’re still under the restrictions but we’ve gone almost totally virtual. Everyone’s been asking what we’re doing this year, and we’re excited to put on the events we are going to have,” Prince Albert Pride chair Marc Roberts told paNOW.

Prince Albert Pride will kick off on Saturday with the Drag Me Across Saskatchewan event, a drive-in drag show with shows at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Then on Sunday, the Calvary United Church will hold a Diversity Church Service both online at 10 a.m. and in person at 10:30 a.m.

Later on Sunday, there will be a Pride Caravan, with 50 colourful and loud vehicles and floats spreading Pride energy throughout Prince Albert. The caravan, a safer version of the famous Pride Parade, will leave from the EA Rawlinson Centre at 1 p.m.

To wrap up Sunday, there will be some online Evening Entertainment that will be live-streamed from the Prince Albert Pride Facebook Page starting at 7 pm. Pride Flag Raisings will go up throughout the city on Tuesday. These will also be streamed from the P.A. Pride Facebook page.

And the final event of Pride Week will be the Queer Coffee with Slam Poetry on Thursday at 7 p.m. The poetry slam will be on zoom. P.A. Pride will be supplying participants with free hot chocolate packages to enjoy during the slam and is also selling coffee mugs for the event.

“People are very excited that we’re having events this year. The comments and feedback have been very positive. Everybody’s all excited about doing something and building our community back. Even though we’re all isolating, we’re still reaching out and communicating and getting together again,” Roberts said.
