Agriculture Roundup for Wednesday June 16, 2021

Jun 16, 2021 | 11:02 AM

MELFORT, Sask. — A bin full of grain can be dangerous, trapping someone who falls in. More firefighters who get an urgent call for help will know how to save a life thanks to training funded by FMC Canada.

This is the third year that FMC is a major sponsor of the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association’s BeGrainSafe program. The mobile training and demonstration unit has a built-in bin.

Above the bin is an arm that can safely lower a person or mannequin into the grain. Cameras, a PA system, and TV monitors show how properly trained rescue demonstrators extract the victim before they are swallowed up by the grain.

The trailer will be travelling across the prairie provinces this summer providing training to firefighters. There is also an online training module which is available to anyone interested in learning the basics.

Programs in Saskatchewan that build public trust in agriculture will continue to receive federal and provincial funding.

Farm and Food Care, Agriculture in the Classroom (AITC-SK) and 4-H Sask will receive $1.5 million over two years.

Federal agriculture minister Marie-Claude Bibeau said the money will be used to help bridge the gap between consumers and food processors, to help grow these relationships and provide trustworthy sources of information.

The two-year agreements will provide Farm and Food Care Saskatchewan with a total of $300,000, 4-H Saskatchewan with $600,000 and Agriculture in the Classroom Saskatchewan with $610,000.
