Multiple tornadoes touch down in night of severe weather in Sask

At least three tornadoes touched down Tuesday evening in central-west Saskatchewan.

That’s according to Environment Canada meteorologist, Dan Fulton, who says a night of thunderstorms, hail and viscous winds were on the menu for parts of the province.

“It looks like there was at least three tornadoes located generally in the area between Kindersley and Rosetown,” Fulton said. “There are lots of pictures on social media of a big looping funnel touching the ground, some reports of some power lines down and a little bit of farm damage.

“Nothing too bad that we’ve heard of so far. We will try and sort out today to see exactly how many there were in the end.”

Southwest of Saskatoon, in the Herschel area, Jimme’e Wiens and her husband spotted a funnel cloud just after 5:30 Tuesday evening.

“We were kind of looking at it, then I started to get a little more nervous because that funnel cloud went up into the sky,” said Wiens.

There also was a severe thunderstorm warning in place for that area, as well as for regions near The Battlefords, Unity, Maidstone, Swift Current, Herbert and Lucky Lake

Heat warnings and severe thunderstorm watches were in effect for various areas of the province, too.

Toonie sized hail was reported in parts of the the central-west region and nickle sized hail in the Saskatoon area.

“There was a wide variety of severe weather,” Fulton said.

Temperatures that are much more “seasonable” are expected for the rest of the week with temperatures ranging around 20 to 25 C for the foreseeable future.
