More in-person graduations at Prince Albert high schools

The light at the end of the tunnel is appearing in Saskatchewan as in-person gatherings are increasing once again. Life is almost back to the way it was before the pandemic and for this year’s grad class, that is great news.

While high schools in Prince Albert will be not having grad ceremonies the way it was before the pandemic, this year graduation will take place in-person with adaptations rather than being virtual like last year.

Carlton Comprehensive Public High School

Carlton Comprehensive Public High School will be doing a drive-thru graduation this year.

Principal at Carlton High School, Jeff Court says the over 250 grads at his school are relieved they get to celebrate together.

“Overall, the students are excited that they will be able to have a celebration and have something to look back on in their schooling lives,” Court said.

“The front steps of our school is basically like a great big stage, we’re going to utilize the front steps. The neat part of that is when they came to us that is the front of the school where they would enter, that’s where it all began. It’s going to become the final culmination of all of the hard work that they have done to get to this place of graduation.”

The drive-thru graduation at Carlton is taking place on June 25. Students and parents will wait in their vehicles, for their turn for the presentation. Vehicles will line-up in the Art Hauser Parking lot in alphabetical order of the student. There will be a red-carpet stage set-up on the front steps of the school. When it is the students turn, the student will be presented their diploma on stage, then get back in their car safely and make room for the next person in-line.

“This year we are happy to offer an in-person event that grads can take part in, and parents can share in that moment as well,” Court said.

Distance Learning Centre

This year, a newly established distance learning centre was started and accepted students K-12 from the Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division.

The distance learning centre will have 14 graduates this year. Because of their strong ties to communities and previous schools in the SRPSD, grads at the DLC will attend their previous school graduation ceremony.

Principal, Carrie Grant-Walker said the distance learning centre will also be celebrating student’s achievements.

“We’re excited to celebrate our graduates here at the DLC on our website and Facebook page,” Grant-Walker said. “We’ve got a variety of things happening for our students to accommodate to honour their school experience.

“We have grad certificates for each of our students and we ordered grad lawn signs for them as well. They are getting that recognition however we can in a virtual way this year.”
