Raiders fall to ICE, have one game left in the hub

For a hockey franchise that calls themselves the Winnipeg ICE, they have a lot of firepower.

The Prince Albert Raiders got a reminder of that on Monday as the ICE scored three unanswered goals in the third period to steal a win away from the Raiders and take a 4-3 win in Regina at the Subway Hub Centre.

Karter Prosofsky scored the game-winner, as his shot went through both Peyton Krebs and Remy Aquilon, who were fighting for position in front of the net.

Conor Geekie had a goal and an assist in the frame, while underaged rookie Zach Benson also scored.

But before that, the Raiders looked in control of the game. They found themselves up 3-1 after 40 minutes of play with goals from soon-to-be-graduates Spencer Moe and Justin Nachbaur, as well as San Jose Sharks prospect Ozzy Wiesblatt.

Even with the ICE’s three goals in the third period, Raider head coach Marc Habscheid still thought his team was better for most of the period—his team just made two mistakes that ended up in their net.

“I thought we were pretty much the better team the whole game. We made two mistakes in the third period that ended up in our net,” Habscheid said. “It’s disappointing, but we liked our guys. We were the better team, for sure.”

Raider 15-year-old Terrell Goldsmith got some big-time assignments, as he was matched up at times throughout the game against the ICE’s top line. In the first period, he went right after Connor McClennon in front of the net, then deskated Peyton Krebs on the boards on his next shift.

“To do that, he’s definitely got an edge about him to play that way,” Habscheid said. “He’s been successful, not just at this level but in his career. He’s 15, but he’s playing physical.”

New look

The Raiders were wearing special edition jerseys for Monday’s game, designed by fan Brooks Freeman. The Raiders are auctioning off the jerseys, and donating a portion of the proceeds to Cystic Fibrosis Canada. The auction will run until May 3.
