Raiders are Horon fire

The Prince Albert Raiders may have found a new breakout strategy, ‘flip the puck to Michael Horon.’

They used that strategy a handful of times in Thursday’s victory over the Moose Jaw Warriors. Late in the first period, Ozzy Wiesblatt flipped the puck into Warriors territory and allowed Horon to fly through the neutral zone to chase it. He beat Warriors captain Daemon Hunt to the puck, and beat him on the outside to score the eventual game-winner.

“I think my greatest asset is my speed. Anytime I can get the puck in open ice there, I like to use my speed,” Horon said. “Luckily [Thursday], I was able to find the back of the net.”

It isn’t just his speed that makes him successful on rushes like that. Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid likes how Horon positions himself.

“When Michael gets going down the side, he’s not the biggest guy but he actually uses his size to his advantage. He’s low and he’s powerful. You can see on his goal, Hunt couldn’t get any leverage on him,” Habscheid said. “When he gets a step, he’s sneaky quick. He keeps his feet planted and he almost picks up speed when he’s going around the corners. It’s tough to handle when he drives to the net.”

Horon has been crashing the net lately. The

forward from Lethbridge has four goals on the season, but three have come in the last four games. Horon nods to his linemates, as he has been teaming up nicely with Eric Pearce and Justin Nachbaur. In fact, Eric Pearce scored the game’s second goal.

“Our line has been clicking. Me, Nacho, and Pearcey, we’ve been able to convert on our chances, working hard, and getting to the dirty areas. They’re going in, so hopefully we can keep it going,” Horon said.

Horon and the rest of the Raiders (7-8-2-1) will be looking for their fourth straight victory, and fifth game with at least a point, when they take on the Regina Pats (6-9-2-1) on Sunday at 8 p.m. That will wrap up the season series with the Pats. The Raiders are 2-1 against the Pats this year.

Then after that, the Raiders will finish out their season series with the Warriors (7-10-1). The Raiders are 2-0-1 against the Warriors.
