Snowstorm expected to rip through Prince Albert and Melfort areas

Mar 29, 2021 | 1:02 PM

It’s not going to be pretty. A snowstorm sweeping across the province has already forced parts of Saskatchewan to lose their power and produced zero visibility in areas like Kindersley. By mid afternoon police were also warning against driving unless absolutely necessary with at least one major highway incident.

Earlier Environment Canada meteorologist Terri Lang said the Prince Albert and Melfort areas could experience snowfalls of up to 10 cm, and wind gusts up to 70 km/h.

By shortly after 5 p.m. Monday the storm was prominent across large parts of the province although appeared to have moved passed Prince Albert and Melfort areas. (Environment Canada)

And since the roads have been warm and wet with the recent better weather we’ve had lately, roads will be icy and slippery as well with the fall of the temperature.

“It’s going to be quite a mess out there,” Lang said. “People should take that into consideration if they’re heading out on the roads today.”

Highway #11 north of Hague blocked

Just after 3 p.m., RCMP reported Highway #11 north of Hague was blocked by a jacknifed semi.

The RCMP reported low visibility and advised all motorists to avoid travel in the area as there is no estimated time for when the roadway will be cleared.

RCMP encouraged motorists to check conditions on Highway Hotline before venturing out and consider staying home if possible.

A look at the day

Speaking Monday morning, Lang anticipated the worse we’ll get would be in the afternoon.

“The heaviest snow will be falling late morning, through to the early afternoon, and that’s when the winds are expected as well. I would expect that would be the worse time.”

By 5 p.m., most of the snow should fall but there still could be light snow. The wind will still be gusting up to 60 km/h. It is expected to diminish by nightfall.
