Not guilty plea entered in Gateway Mall stabbing case; lawyer elects trial by jury

A woman accused of second degree murder has entered a plea of not guilty and will be tried by a jury at Prince Albert Court of Queen’s Bench.

That was the outcome of Tuesday’s hearing at Prince Albert Provincial Court for Latisha Grumbo. The 19-year-old appeared by video from Pine Grove Correctional Centre

Last August, Grumbo was charged with fatally stabbing Kayla Aubichon. The incident happened on the night of July 28, 2020 in the Gateway Mall’s parking lot area. Aubichon was pronounced deceased in hospital.

Grumbo’s mother, Marie, has attended every court hearing thus far and, following the completion of Tuesday’s hearing, told paNOW she is glad to see the proceedings move forward.

“I’m just lost without her,” she said.

Marie Grumbo explained Latisha is the youngest of her four children, and has been her primary caregiver and source of support. With respect to the serious charge her daughter faces, Grumbo fought back tears and said it’s in the hands of the courts.

“I told my kids growing up that they are responsible for what they do,” she said.

In addition to entering the not guilty plea on his client’s behalf, Grumbo’s lawyer Angus McLean elected for the case to be tried by a jury. Before a date is set though, the charge will be spoken first at a preliminary hearing. Two days have been set aside for the hearing in July, which will be used to weight the crown’s evidence in the case.

In addition to the second degree murder charge, Grumbo also faces a number of unrelated charges from an incident on June 30, 2020 involving the theft of a vehicle and reckless driving causing bodily harm. Those charges will also be spoken to in July at the preliminary hearing.
