MELFORT, Sask. – The evaluation of potential new crop cultivars is the focus of the Prairie Grain Development Committee online annual meetings continuing this week.

The organization discusses and communicates research priorities and exchanges information on the development of improved varieties.

At the forum, wheat breeder Dr Richard Cuthbert presented two new lines.

Cuthbert said HY2095 has a yield roughly nine per cent higher than AC Penhold. It is also wheat midge tolerant and has very good stripe rust resistance.

The second variety, HY2096, has strong straw, is six per cent higher yielding than AC Penhold, has better fusarium head blight resistance and is midge tolerant.

Cuthbert said both varieties are more suited to the Alberta region.

It’s been a good month for the cattle markets.

Canfax reported roughly 8,000 head of cattle were sold in Saskatchewan up from 6,500 the previous week.

Most steer and heifer weight classes were up $2 to $5 per hundredweight.

Steers in the 800-to-900-pound category were up an average of $2.88 per hundredweight.

The largest increase was for 400-to-500-pound steers, making the average provincial bid $253.38 per hundredweight.
