New signage installed at old Quality Inn

A series of new signs signalling a change in ownership have been installed at the former Quality Inn downtown.

City council approved the sale of the boarded up hotel, which it acquired through the Tax Enforcement Act, to Cumberland Crossing in September for $900,000.

The company, who City Manager Jim Toye has previously told paNOW, is made up of local First Nation located north of the city and a First Nation company headquartered in Prince Albert plans to turn it into affordable student housing and medical accommodation.

Cumberland Crossing submitted the highest offer with no conditions for the property during the tender process, which saw three out of seven bids come in at $150,000 or less.

On Monday, Toye told paNOW Cumberland Crossing’s purchase of the building was “still pending,” and although the installation of signage may have been “a little bit premature,” he was hopeful the sale would be finalized soon.

“[Cumberland Crossing] has run into a couple issues that had to be dealt with and they are dealing with them,” Toye said, referencing delays related to banking. “We’re still confident there’s going to be a sale, just disappointed some of the timelines that were set weren’t able to be adhered to.”

There have been signs of activity inside the hotel for several weeks now. Boards covering the front entrance have been removed and service vans are regularly seen parked outside.

A representative from Cumberland Crossing was not immediately available for comment on Monday.

Services including a restaurant, medical taxi, catering business and public daycare with priority for students are included in Cumberland Crossing’s plans for the buidling. (Alison Sandstrom/paNOW Staff)
