SCHEKK, Sarah Eunice
August 06, 1932 — January 15, 2021
Sarah left us peacefully the afternoon of Friday, January 15, 2021, with her daughter by her side, at a local hospital in Saskatoon in her 88th year. Pneumonia and respiratory complications couldn’t be overcome. She leaves behind her daughter, Karen (Nick) Remenda and their daughter, Lori (Pascal Van Pul) all of Saskatoon. She is also survived by her sister, Margaret; brother, Joseph; sisters-in-law, Mary, Margaret and Ethel; brothers-in-law, Zoltan (Kathy) and Dave; numerous nieces and nephews; godson, Rodney; adopted Grandma by many; as well as many, many amazing friends and neighbours.
She was predeceased by her husband, Andrew (Andy) (2015); her parents, James Kiraly (1968) and Mary (nee: Berenyi) (1981); her in-laws, Joseph Schekk (1965) and Elizabeth (nee: Frisch) (1964); sister, Mary (2014); brothers, Jim (1963) and Mike (2012); sisters-in-law, Ida (1986), Irene (1989), Emma (1995) and Doreen (2020); brothers-in-law, Frank (1999), Louis (2004), Steve (1979), Joseph (2010) and Leslie (2015).
Sarah was born in Mistatim, SK on Saturday, August 06, 1932. She married Andrew Schekk in the fall of 1952. She spent most of her life in the Prince Albert / Spruce Home area. She worked for ten years as a cook at the Flamingo Motel and eighteen years at Woolco in the Carry Out/Deli dept. Along the way she made many good friends. Early retirement was spent as a vendor at the PA Farmers Market. She always enjoyed sharing her bountiful garden with friends and family. Her baking, jams and jellies were enjoyed by many. The wonderful preserves will be greatly missed.
Sarah travelled to many auctions with her husband enjoying the scenery, meeting up with wonderful old and new friends and hoping to get a good deal along the way. In later years, after Andrew’s stroke in 2003, she passed her time tending her “small” garden, flowers and birdwatching – especially the hummingbirds. Another pastime was phoning friends and family after travelling to various parts of Saskatchewan to pass on “crop reports”. Winter was passed with jigsaw puzzles, and reading – especially books of Saskatchewan personalities and happenings. In later years it was mostly mystery books!
A private Memorial Service will be held at a later date for the interment of cremated remains of both Andrew and Sarah Schekk at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Saskatoon. As Covid fades, an informal get-together of family and friends will be held to share some laughs, stories, and memories – if embellished, we know she wouldn’t mind.
Donations in Sarah’s memory can be made to RUH Epilepsy Unit, STARS Air Ambulance, Saskatoon SPCA or to a charity of donor’s choice. Condolences may be sent to www.hillcrestmemorial.ca
