Agribition launches online education program

MELFORT, Sask. – Canadian Western Agribition (CWA) has created a virtual education program.

The year-round online platform features content targeted to elementary aged students. The program brings some of the best online and accessible lessons about agriculture directly into the classroom.

CEO Chris Lane said CWA welcomes thousands of students to the show and they wanted to build a platform that helps prepare students and teachers for the experience they will get at Agribition.

Using content from numerous sources, the platform creates a way for students, parents, and teachers to learn about food production and get the most out of their next in-person visit to the show, according to Lane.

“We worked with as many of our educational partners we can so if you’ve been to Agribition you know the different exhibits and the different lessons you can learn,” Lane said. “We brought it all together in one umbrella online portal which is free for any classroom in the province to access year-round.”

Lane said there is a beef cattle component which is a big part of the show but there will be other areas of focus.

“Ag in the Classroom has been a fantastic partner with us in moving some of their programming online,” Lane said. “Everything from soil and crops, environmental stewardship and dairy information as well.”

Lane said it is not just core curriculum content.

“There’s some fun things that can help classrooms and students work away on a snow day too,” he said.

The Virtual Education Program is accessible through Agribition’s website using any device or laptop. The platform will be year-round with new educational content added as it becomes available.

Lane said CWA’s 50th show will take place Nov. 22 to 27. At least that’s the plan right now.

“We’re planning for a full show in November. There’s lots that need to happen before then. It’s a big machine and we have to plan early if there’s a hope to do it and that’s what we’re doing,” Lane said.

Agribition is located in Regina, Sask. and is considered the largest livestock show in Canada.

It is anchored by beef cattle and features horses, bison, sheep, alpacas, an extensive agribusiness trade show and professional rodeo.
