Stars make their name despite lack of live audience

Jan 26, 2021 | 3:00 PM

There was no live audience but still plenty of buzz from the young talent at the Canadian Tire Search For The Stars show that took place Sunday at the EA Rawlinson Centre. COVID-19 health regulations meant the performances could only be viewed by live stream.

Organizers said over a hundred people tuned in online to see the eight to 18 years do their thing. Their performances included the skills they’d been helped with during two half-day workshops hosted by very experienced judges: Derek Melchert, Paul Lomheim, and Lindsay “Eekwol” Knight.

“It was a little bit sad because there was no applause at the end and the normal stuff you’re used to when you’re performing,” singer-songwriter winner, 17-year-old Relan Meeks told paNOW. “But it was really nice after all this pandemic to be back on stage in some sort of way… it was amazing.”

Meeks, a Grade 12 student at St. Mary High School, performed her original song Self behind the piano and wins a $1,000 recording contract for it.

“I’m so excited to get started and start recording and be able to release music to people who really enjoy listening,” she said.
