Alberta farmers will receive a 20 per cent reduction in crop insurance premiums this year.

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Devin Dreeshen said this will result in a $55 million saving for producers and a farm with 2,000 insured acres will save about $8,000 this year.

Dreeshen said this puts money back into the pockets of Alberta farmers.

“This will help counter the 500 per cent increase in federal carbon tax, a misguided Clean Fuel Standard, and an impending punitive fertilizer limit regulation all imposed by the federal government,” Dreeshen said in a media release.

Roughly 72 per cent of Alberta farmers enrol in the program each year.

Saskatchewan heifer prices were higher last week.

The largest price increase for feeder heifers was $4.42 in the 400 to 500 category.

The average bid was $201.17 per hundredweight. Only 700-to-800-pound heifers reported a declined.

Feeder steer prices moved lower as the average price of 600-to-700-pound steers dropped by $1.56.

Canfax reported roughly 17,800 head of cattle were sold in Saskatchewan.

Manitoba Pork has found its new general manager.

Cam Dahl will take over the position starting Feb. 22.

Dahl has extensive background in Canadian agriculture in both the livestock and crops sectors.

He most recently served as the chief strategy officer for Cereals Canada. He was also the general manager of Manitoba Beef Producers, commissioner for the Canadian Grain Commission, and as executive director of Grain Growers of Canada.

Dahl will be replacing Andrew Dickson, who is retiring after 15 years with Manitoba Pork.
