CALGARY, AB. — It’s a once every year opportunity for young ranchers to hone their skills, build their knowledge base and increase their support system.

Applications are open for the Cattlemen’s Young Leaders mentor program. Jessica Giles, the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association Youth Leadership Co-ordinator, explains the opportunity is available to young people between the age of 18 and 35, who are passionate about the Canadian beef industry

Giles notes, “It’s open to all young people involved in various areas of the beef industry and given the challenges of this past year, it may be the perfect time to apply to the program and find a mentor.”

She outlined what is involved in the program.

“Participants are paired with industry leaders in their specific area of interest in the beef industry, for a nine month mentorship opportunities. The mentorship focus areas can range anywhere from grazing management to building public trust, livestock handling and welfare, industry policy and much more.”

” In addition to being matched with a mentor, participants are also given a $2000 budget to fund learning opportunities and to expand their network.”

Applications can be found on the Cattlemen’s Young Leaders website at www.cattlemensyoungleaders.com, and applications are open until March 31. Each year, semi-finalists are selected from the applications received and they are invited to attend round-table discussions, that are held in conjunction with the Canadian Beef Industry Conference. At that round table, 16 final candidates are selected to participate in the program.

Giles feels participation in the Cattlemen’s Young Leaders mentor program provides a tremendous opportunity for the up-and-coming industry leaders of tomorrow:

“It’s an exciting experience and it’s great to learn from someone who has all that knowledge in the industry, in the specific area you’re interested in and to really have a support system – you also get to meet other young people who are just as passionate about the success of the Canadian beef industry as you are.”
