First Indigenous-owned liquor store opens near Saskatoon

The first Indigenous-owned liquor store in Saskatchewan is now open near Saskatoon.

Part of the Grasswood area, The Patch Wine and Spirits is located on the English River First Nation’s urban reserve land. In a news release, the company behind the store highlighted the convenience and potential benefits to members.

“The residents of Corman Park won’t have to drive through the city, and it offers a tax savings for Status individuals,” said Jason Allen, the director of retail for Des Nedhe Group, English River’s economic development body. Allen noted that the store will also be providing a section dedicated to Indigenous-made wine, spirits and beer, and an Indigenous art installation.

The store part of a larger portfolio of real estate and retail holdings aimed at providing jobs and economic benefit for English River and its members.

“This feels like a real progression to what we already offer,” said Allen. Des Nedhe Group operates multiple gas station, convenience store, and car washes, a property management company, and two mining companies.
