Santa security: brightening up a serious task on Christmas Day
It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it – and we’re not talking about being Santa, although on Christmas Day the pressure is on to play the part well. Dakota Sugar, 16, is one of many people who are on duty today across our region to ensure essential services are maintained.
Police, fire, paramedics, nurses, doctors, border security and many other essential personnel will have donned their regular work outfits for just another regular Friday shift, and Dakota, a grade 11 student at Carlton High School figured he’d add some fun to what is a serious business – ensuring only those on his authorized list are allowed access to the Muskoday First Nation, given the current COVID-19 restrictions.
“It’s Christmas Day, I wanted to cheer up the people coming and going, “ he told paNOW this morning in his red garb and black boots. He stays in his van at the border post to keep out of the cold but gets out and presents a candy cane to anyone who comes by. He works security three or four days a week and is on the 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. shift today.
He’s hoping to have a little Christmas cheer with his mom and sister during his break.
