One Arrow prepares for two-week lockdown

Dec 17, 2020 | 2:00 PM

Effective Monday, no one can enter or leave the One Arrow First Nation for a period of two weeks.

The full lockdown announced by the community’s Emergency Management Team is being done to lower the number of cases within the community and prevent further transmission.

“It was decided this was the best course of action,” a statement from the band’s emergency management team and leadership read.

The tentative ending for the lockdown is Jan. 4 and the only two exceptions to the rule will be emergency personnel and essential services employees/vehicles.

“Membership should prepare and purchase essential supplies to maintain their basic needs during the two-week lockdown,” the statement said.

Band members who have scheduled medical appointments or surgeries are being asked to provide proper documentation in advance, and anyone who works outside the community has been asked to provide a copy of their work schedule to security.

Band members have also been cautioned that anyone who chooses to leave the nation must do so before the lockdown begins and re-entry will not be granted until the lockdown ends.

“We understand that the holidays are a time for family and friends to gather and celebrate. Unfortunately during a worldwide pandemic and an outbreak declared in our community, we needed to put our members’ safety first and foremost,” the statement said.

As an incentive to help encourage people to follow the rules, all homes have been supplied with a turkey meal. A desktop computer and internet were also previously provided as part of the band’s education initiative when the pandemic was first announced.

“Look after one another and support each other. We are all in this together and we can all get through this together,” the statement said

Attempts by paNOW to reach the director of operations for further comment on current COVID-19 numbers were not successful.
