Lynx found wandering Prince Albert streets

A wild cat has been spotted wandering the streets of Prince Albert. A video of the lost animal taken Wednesday was shared to Facebook but was taken down shortly after.

In a statement made by the Ministry of Environment for the Government of Saskatchewan, they confirmed they had received multiple reports of the animal and when they investigated they were able to verify the animal was in fact a lynx.

According to the ministry, officers believe the animal wandered into the city overnight in search of prey. They believe the lynx will seek cover until nightfall before making its move out of the city.

The animal was in the Southwood area of Prince Albert, outside the bingo hall. Officers are monitoring the situation and ask that the public to try to avoid the area.

The Ministry of Environment recommends if you encounter a lynx to treat it like you would any other wild animal. Keep your distance, make noise, and do not turn your back to the animal. Lynxes are generally shy and wary of humans and typically avoid human activity and populations.

According to the statement made by the ministry:

“Every year, wildlife will move around to establish new territory and look for food. This is normal behaviour for wildlife, especially for younger animals. In Saskatchewan, urban areas have been built along natural wildlife corridors such as rivers, forests, and valleys. Wildlife traveling these traditional passageways can sometimes come into conflict with people and property. Lynxes are a natural part of the landscape in northern Saskatchewan.”

To report unusual activity by large animals within city limits contact Saskatchewan Conservation officers at 306-953-2322.
