Crystal show brings collectors, curious visitors to Prince Albert

From crystal enthusiasts seeking positive energy to fossil hunters and first-time visitors, a wide range of people are expected to browse the Stone Haven Crystal Healing and Mineral Show this weekend at the Prince Albert Exhibition Centre.

The two-day event features vendors from across Western Canada offering crystals, minerals, fossils, carvings, jewelry, art and handcrafted items while sharing knowledge about their collections.

“We’re just a group of vendors that get together who are promoting community over competition,” said Brody Weber of Lethbridge, Alta. “We’re just here to educate people on crystals and to sell our crystals and have a good time. It’s all about positive energy.”

According to Weber, interest in crystals varies widely among visitors. Some are drawn to the spiritual and metaphysical beliefs associated with different stones, while others are collectors looking for unique mineral specimens or artistic carvings.

“Every crystal has a purpose,” he said, noting that some people associate rose quartz with self-love, amethyst with grounding and fluorite with focus.

For others, the attraction is purely visual.

“We’ve got the nerds who like the carvings,” Weber said with a laugh.

Weber said one of his favourite pieces in his own personal collection is a sphere that is actually a composite of about five different minerals that also fluoresce three different colours under blacklight.

The show marks its first appearance in Prince Albert. Vendors travel throughout Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia, bringing items sourced from around the world. Some exhibitors also collect minerals themselves.

“People don’t understand, but you all have so many really cool minerals in every locale,” Weber said. “And you have minerals that are very specific to your regions as well.”

Among those is ammolite, a gemstone found primarily in southern Alberta.

Weber’s own fascination with rocks began as a child hiking in the mountains near his southern Alberta home.

“I was that kid that was always throwing rocks into my pockets whenever we’d go out hiking,” he said.

His interest expanded as he learned more about geology, especially minerals that react under ultraviolet light.

“Once I found out that there’s rocks that react to UV light, that was it,” he said. “I was all over it.”

Visitors on opening day included Terry Davis of Choiceland, who said her interest stems from years spent exploring rocks and fossils with her son.

“It’s something that I used to do with my son when he was little because he liked rocks,” Davis said. “The fossils piece is usually what brought us in because we like to check out those things.”

While Davis said she does not personally subscribe to many of the spiritual beliefs associated with crystals, she enjoys seeing the craftsmanship behind the displays and supporting artists and vendors.

“I like to support local types of artisans and just make things be beautiful,” she said.

She added that she appreciates seeing people pursue work they are passionate about.

“When I see somebody who’s loving what they’re doing, it’s just like, ‘Oh, I want to support them,’” Davis said.

Weber said the event attracts a diverse audience, from experienced collectors and crystal enthusiasts to people who arrive simply out of curiosity.

“Literally everybody,” he said. “The people who believe in the spiritual and metaphysical, the people who are dragged here by their partners and then discover that there’s actually something that they really like, high-end collectors, people who are just starting out. Everybody.”

The Stone Haven Crystal Healing and Mineral Show continues until 8 p.m. Saturday and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Prince Albert Exhibition Centre.
