MELFORT, Sask. – Saskatchewan farm groups applauded Ottawa’s new plan for expanding and improving rural internet service.

The $1.75 billion fund will service 98 per cent of Canadians with high speed broadband service by the year 2026.

Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities president Ray Orb said improved internet service is important for farmers and rural businesses. He said it should be considered an essential service.

Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister David Marit welcomed the federal support for high speed rural broadband service. He said SaskTel has built hundreds of cell phone towers and continues to expand service.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe announced his new cabinet and there is a familiar face returning to the agriculture portfolio.

David Marit will continue in his role as agriculture minister and minister responsible for Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation.

Also returning to cabinet is Jeremy Harrison who remains the minister of Trade and Export Development.

The fall calf run showed improved numbers after a difficult October.
