Election 2020: Sask Party retains P.A. Carlton riding

Oct 26, 2020 | 11:50 PM

Prince Albert’s Carlton riding stays green after the 29th general election, Monday night. Joe Hargrave will serve a second term as MLA, after winning a back-to-back majority.

Hargrave received a total of 3,470 votes compared to the 2,112 of the NDP’s Troy Parenteau, with all ballot boxes counted. 935 mail-in ballots were issued and still need to be counted.

Hargrave is humbled by the support from the community.

“Last election was exciting; this year is as well,” Hargrave said. “I’m humbled that the people of Prince Albert felt good enough about me to give me another four years.”

Hargrave commented on the differences between his 2016 campaign compared to this year, which was deeply affected by the pandemic.

“It’s really difficult when you come out of a handshake and hug type of world, into just a hand waving type of thing,” Hargrave explained. “People grew up here and a handshake was their word, their bond, or their sign. It’s a little bit different, but everyone is getting used to it.”

In 2016 Hargrave’s priority was to improve Prince Albert, focusing on jobs, the bridge, and the hospital. This year, due to the pandemic Hargrave must focus on rebuilding the economy.

“We go right from the election, and get back to work,” Hargrave said. “We have to get back to work, and we have to go hard. The economy is depending on us getting back at it.”

Despite the pandemic effecting so many lives across the province, Hargraves is pleased with how the majority of Saskatchewan people have handled things.

“Saskatchewan has come through the best of all the provinces so far, as far as numbers go,” Hargrave said. “It’s not nice to see this spike right now, but we are right there and we’re asking people to do the right thing.”

As far as upcoming plans, Hargrave wants to wait to see the rest of the vote first before moving forward.

“There should be another fall [legislative] session between now and Christmas, exactly when that will start, I don’t know,” Hargrave explained. “I’ll be looking forward to opening my constituency office again and getting back to work for the people of Prince Albert and area.”

Other local winners

The Sask Party’s Nadine Wilson has been elected to a fourth term in Saskatchewan Rivers. She told paNOW she was very honoured by the support.

“I’ve worked hard and I will enjoy working again with the people [in the constituency] and for them,” she said.

If re-elected, Wilson committed to lowering power bills for homeowners, renters, farmers and businesses. She has also pledged to help improve Wi-Fi and cellular service across the region.

Over in Batoche, Delbert Kirsh was re-elected for the Sask Party. He had over 2,000 more votes than the NDP’s Lon Borgerson.

In addition to his party’s provincial election win, Scott Moe also had a clear and decisive victory in Rosthern – Shellbrook with over 5,000 votes, roughly 4,000 more than NDP candidate Trina Miller.

Moe was first elected to the rural constituency in the 2011 vote and won again in 2016. In 2018, he became Premier after winning a leadership vote that was held when former premier Brad Wall retired.

Editor’s note: this story was amended early morning Tuesday to reflect the result once all 51 ballot boxes were counted.
