WHL announces its players can be loaned to Junior A, B or Under-18 leagues

The Western Hockey League announced on Friday that it is allowing players to join teams at the Junior A, Junior B, and Under-18 levels on a loan-basis.

Since Junior A, Junior B and Under-18 levels have already begun playing or will start shortly and the WHL won’t start until Jan. 8, 2021, a temporary transfer to a lower league will allow for players to keep in shape before the WHL season starts.

“This is an opportunity for WHL roster players to continue their development by playing hockey at a competitive level,” WHL commissioner Ron Robison said in a statement. “We felt it was very important to accommodate the requests of WHL roster players to play competitive hockey on a temporary basis in anticipation of WHL Training Camps beginning after Christmas.”

Earlier on Friday, there were several temporary transfers to the Junior A ranks.

The Estevan Bruins announced on Twitter that Everett Silvertip and former Prince Albert Raider first-rounder Cole Fonstad is joining his hometown until Dec. 20.

Prince Albert’s Ethan Regnier was loaned to the Melfort Mustangs.

WHL roster players will be allowed to play in Junior A, Junior B, and Under-18 leagues until mid-December. They will then attend WHL Training Camps after the holiday break.
