Baring it all for a good cause

Jul 30, 2020 | 4:00 PM

As a result of COVID-19, community groups across the province have been stripped of their ability to fundraise, forcing those groups to come up with creative ways to keep running.

For the second year in a row, the Lakeland Curling Club in Christopher Lake has made a Naked Curler Calendar, featuring some cleverly covered models. Committee Chair Jaysan Marsh explained the calendars come with a purchase of a ticket into the club’s cash draw.

“We are printing 2,000 tickets and if we sell them all, we should make $50,000,” he said.

To help entice ticket sales, the cash prizes are $2,500, $1500, and $1,000. The draw will be made in March.

In terms of fundraising this year, Marsh explained the curling club is pretty much at a standstill for money coming in, with no events this summer and there’s no guarantee there will even be curling this fall. In the meantime, there are still expenses to pay.

“We’ve got to keep the place cleaned up. We’ve got to keep the power on,” Marsh said

Marsh acknowledged bingos have started up, but added they are not raising the same amount of money as they used to.

“This is our only thing keeping everything going,” he said.

The first set of 2021 calendars was released June 1. Marsh did not know how many tickets have been sold so far, but estimated they were about a quarter of the way towards their goal.

Larry Krause, a well known local entertainer and host of the award-winning Timberline Music show, is one of the featured models in the 2021 calendar. When asked about the experience of posing nude, Krause joked it’s one of those things you look back on and wonder what you got yourself into.

“It really wasn’t all that bad and it is one of those things when you are part of a community, you try to make some level of contribution and I figured this was something that kinda fit,” he said.

Tickets for the cash draw can be bought through the Naked Curler Facebook page or by calling Jaysan Marsh directly at (306) 960 – 6651.
