MELFORT, Sask. – The Canadian Crop Hail Association said crop damage hail claims continue to mount.

President Rick Omelchenko said group members reported 120 claims for storms in late June and early July.

He said heavy rain and flooding contributed to crop damage from hailstorms in parts of Western Canada.

In Saskatchewan storms damaged crops in Tisdale, Lake Lenore, Churchbridge, Calder, Biggar, Estevan, Neudorf, Plenty, Semans and Assiniboia.

Omelchenko said damage ranged from light to severe with hail stones in the pea to tennis ball size.

Hog prices continue to be depressed as producers continue to struggle with market options.

Tyler Fulton with Hams Marketing Services said the cash market in the United States has struggled to make gains. He said the values are at some of the lowest levels he has seen in the last decade.

Fulton said there is still a backlog of animals for processing as plants are not back up to 100 per cent capacity. He added the U.S. hog slaughter continues to run at the highest levels for this time of year, with the COVID-19 backlog still getting worked through.

He said forward hog contract prices continue to struggle.
