Prince Albert RCMP reminds the public about boat safety

Jun 27, 2020 | 12:00 PM

The Prince Albert RCMP is reminding residents of the rules of boating.

With the warm weather already here and Canada Day right around the corner, Sgt. Brian Kelly said the P.A. RCMP wants the public to know impaired driving laws on a boat are the same as operating a motor vehicle.

Those who drink while boating can also be charged under the criminal code of Canada and if caught driving under the influence will be the same punishment as driving a vehicle. They can also be charged under the Alcohol and Gaming Regulations Act, for drinking alcohol in a non-private place is illegal while on a boat.

“Obviously, it’s a big boating season and people have been restricted from using their boats,” Kelly told paNOW. “So, we kind of have a suspicion that there’s going to be a lot more traffic because people have been held back from using their boats and there may be a big influx of boaters going north.”

He said it is important to respect the laws in relation to impaired driving and being diligent of boating safety such as wearing a life jacket, safe boating, safe distances, and speed.

“I just wanna make sure everybody is having a good and safe Canada Day holiday out on the waters and expect we may be out there just making sure that everybody’s being safe and having a good time,” he explained.
