PACI puts on outdoor grad parade

Jun 26, 2020 | 5:03 PM

Teachers and staff from Prince Albert Collegiate Institute braved the at times wet conditions Friday to celebrate the school’s graduating students.

Teachers lined up in front of the school and one by one students walked down the line as part of the informal grand march. Some of the students put on their graduation outfits for the occasion.

Kylie Emmerson, a teacher who helped organize the event, said the original idea to do something came from students.

“We came up with a reverse parade where the teachers could stay in one spot and have the students come through,” she said.

As the graduates made their way down the sidewalk they were greeted by teachers telling them congratulations, some were even blowing bubbles.

Emmerson said having an informal event like this is important for both students and staff in the wake of the pandemic.

“The students [have] a chance to wear the dresses that they had purchased previous to COVID and it would gives us one last chance for the teachers to say goodbye to each of the students,” she said.

Emmerson explained the idea received a positive response from both students and teachers. She added putting on the event involved work from a lot of teachers as coordination with police was required and the grounds required manicuring.

Being able to send of their Grade 12 students like this is important to teachers, Emmerson said.

“These kids mean the absolute world to us,” she said.
