1921 – 2020
Richard (Dick) passed away peacefully at Brookhaven Care Home in West Kelowna, BC on June 13, 2020.
Dick was born in Hardy Saskatchewan in 1921. In June 1941 he was accepted into RCAF Aircrew Training. After completing his basic training in Brandon, Calgary and Edmonton he was stationed in High River Alberta for his Flying Training. After receiving his WINGS on April 10, 1942, he was posted to Southern England. Through ’43 he flew Medium Bombers and moved into Mosquito/Bombers in 1944. After flying 42 missions into France he was returned to Canada to instruct new pilots. Dick was discharged from the Air Force on September 7, 1945 after reaching the rank of Flight Lieutenant. After the war, Dick returned to Saskatchewan and married Bernice Ewen in 1949. They lived and worked in Saskatchewan until they retired to Kelowna in 1988. There they enjoyed the weather, family and friends. Dick supported many and varied charities and was active with the Legion, United Church, Lions, Optimists and was a Master Mason.
Dick was predeceased by his wife, Bernice, of almost 70 years and is survived by his 4 children: Rick (Clara); Diane (Gerry) Thacyk; Barry; Kevin (Dorothy); Grandchildren: Christopher Sanderson; Stacy (Mike) Thorneloe; Darcie (Casey) Karpiuk, Tara, Ryan (Amy) Sanderson; Regan Sanderson; Jennifer (Ian) Longpre; Erin (Tom) Hurd; Great grandchildren: Tayvan Sanderson; Kaleb and Mitchell Thorneloe; Bailey, Riley and Killian Karpiuk; Owen and Emma Longpre; Tobin and Tessa Hurd.
In lieu of flowers or other tributes, the family would appreciate donations to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 26, Kelowna BC.
Memorial service and inurnment for both Bernice and Dick will be held in Regina, Saskatchewan at a later date.
