NLL cancels 2020 playoffs

The National Lacrosse League has announced the 2020 playoffs will not be completed.

In March, the league announced the cancellation of the regular season due to the coronavirus pandemic, and now Commissioner Nick Sakiewicz explained that playoffs were not feasible.

“After exhaustive efforts weighing all the factors, including the health and safety of all of our players and staff, trying to overcome massive immigration challenges, and analyzing the resources required to execute a postseason tournament under the current circumstances, our senior leadership team and board have decided to re-direct our attention to planning for next season,” Sakiewicz said in a video address.

The league completed 15 weeks of the planned 22 week regular season when things were put on hold. At that time, the Saskatchewan Rush were at the top of the three-team West Division with a record of 7-3.

In four seasons since moving to Saskatoon from Edmonton, the Rush have won two league titles, and lost in the championship in 2017. Last season, the Rush finished first in the division, but fell in the division semi-finals.

The league announced in a statement that the dates for the 2020 NLL Draft, as well as for the start of the 35th season of the NLL, will be announced this fall.
