P.A. firefighters turn double heroes after bicycle mishap

The Prince Albert Firefighters Charity made a little girl’s day after she endured quite the ordeal.

A crew responded to a call after the girl got her leg stuck in her new bicycle. They found Traylynn McCallum with her limb trapped between the pedal and the frame of the bike.

The fire department had to use a hacksaw on the pedal to free her. Her mom said she had been stuck that way for an hour and a half after a ride along the riverbank.

“When she came home she got to the fence here in front of my house, she slipped her leg and went through the pedal,” Tara McCallum explained to paNOW. “It was really tight, and she couldn’t even move her leg. I don’t know how it got in there. I was just scared her leg would go purple.”

After she was freed by the firefighters the little girl was obviously disappointed her first new bike was now unusable. The crew felt bad they had to destroy it so the Prince Albert Firefighters charity bought her a new one.

“Yeah she was really happy, she was just jumping around excited,” McCallum said. She took her daughter to pick out a new bike and then sent in the receipt to the charity for reimbursement.

Treasurer of the charity, Chris Cherepacha, said they’ve never seen anything like this happen before.

“We tried everything: we tried soaping it up, pulling it out, bending it a bit, but even the crank didn’t want to bend a bit,” he said. “It kind of got to the point where really the only way we could get the leg out was to cut the crank.”

Cherepacha said Traylynn was fine after her ordeal although her leg was a little bit sore. After leaving the call he said they wanted to replace her bike.

“You leave the call and you kind of feel bad because especially in this time when there’s not much to do, that bike was a pretty big form of entertainment for her, ” he said.

“It was good to see her showing off her new bike.”
