Where’s the beef? Consumers connect with ranchers

May 8, 2020 | 12:25 PM

Consumers looking for beef still have a lot of options

The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA) has compiled a list of beef producers offering direct sales to customers.

SSGA general manager Chad MacPherson said COVID-19 is disrupting beef processing in Canada and the U.S. and some consumers are turning to local producers for meat supplies.

“In the last weeks, we’ve been receiving more calls from people looking to buy beef directly from ranchers,” MacPherson told farmnewsNOW. “We thought it would be an opportunity for us to help.”

MacPherson said most consumers didn’t know how to connect. That’s why they created the list.

“It’s an easy tool to connect buyers and sellers,” he said.

When stores started limiting purchases of beef products, there was concern about inadequate stock. MacPherson said that’s not an issue.

“There is no shortage of animals, it’s a shortage of processing right now which is creating some challenges for supply and demand at the grocery store,” he said.

MacPherson said it’s also part of the customers desire to know more about their food and people that raise it.

“It’s a growing trend that more and more consumers want to know who they’re buying from and where their food is produced. It helps build relationships between primary producers and consumers,” he said.

The list of ranchers selling direct to consumers is available at www.skstockgrowers.com as well on their social media feeds.
