Local school division working to make families aware of potential supports

The Prince Albert Catholic School Division is working to make families aware of federal funding available.

Jordan’s Principle provides support to First Nations children and families aiming to narrow the gaps which exist in healthcare, education and other outcomes.

P.A. Catholic School Division Director of Education Lorel Trumier updated the school board Monday evening on the efforts currently underway to make families aware of the available supports.

“So we’re just in the process of trying to communicate with all of our families who have self-declared as First Nations, that grant opportunity is available,” she told paNOW.

Trumier explained the potential supports are likely to be especially appreciated as families who qualify could use the money to help pay for technology to be used for at home learning. This could include WiFi internet or laptop computers.

“That’s something that is really exciting, especially during this time of COVID-19, that it’ll give families the opportunity to access resources,” she said.

The province’s students have been learning from home since the COVID-19 virus forced the shutdown of schools. Trumier said they are happy with the number of families who have opted to take part.

Trumier explained to the board the division is working to make families aware of these supports by sending out letters. School administrators are also working to follow up with phone calls. The division has posted information on their website.

The division has two local service coordinators who are able to help those applying through the process. Jordan’s Principle has a call centre where people can get more information.
