Carlton High School basketball star nets scholarship

A Prince Albert Carlton Crusader senior will be heading to the Okanagan this fall after receiving a scholarship.

Josh Guenther, has signed with the Okanagan College Coyotes of the Pacific Western Athletic Association.

The 6’5” guard was the captain of the Crusaders boy’s basketball team and a 2020 5A Saskatchewan All-Star.

He told paNOW he was excited when he found out the Coyotes wanted to sign him.

“I put a lot of hard work into basketball and it’s always something I wanted to do, and playing at the next level is going to be nothing but fun,” Guenther said, while adding he was looking forward to the competitive atmosphere of college basketball.

“It’s just so crazy compared to high school basketball, it’s because everyone is a good player on their team, and coming from a team where you were that good player, and then coming to a team where you’re just a new guy it’s a lot different,” he explained. “Everyone loves basketball too.”

He’s expecting a substantial difference in the competition and skill level of college compared to high school.

“Everyone is ten times better than high school, because people actually work into getting into these schools,” Guenther said.

He’s received a few welcomes from the coaches and from a former teammate from the elite Rise Above Basketball Academy in Saskatchewan will be joining him.

“I always want to improve my game, it’s something that you have to do especially in the next level,” he said. “Definitely next year I will improve a lot because just playing with better people increases your skill by so much.

“The coaches that I’ve had in high school helped tremendously along the way and in my club season like Rise Above [Basketball Academy.]”
