Roughriders sign a pair of former NFLers

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have added two players with NFL experience.

The CFL team announced Wednesday it had signed 25-year-old wide receiver Demarcus Ayers and 27-year-old defensive lineman Pete Robertson.

Ayers, a 5-foot-10, 190-pound product of the University of Houston, was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the seventh round (229th overall) of the 2016 NFL draft.

He played two regular-season games with the Steelers during the 2016 season, catching six passes for 53 yards and a touchdown.

After stints with the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots, he spent part of the 2019 Alliance of American Football season with the San Antonio Commanders.

The 6-foot-2, 243-pound Robertson played collegiately at Texas Tech University. He spent time in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks, Washington Redskins and Arizona Cardinals.

In six career regular-season games in the NFL, he had two solo tackles and two assists.

Back to B.C.

Linebacker Dyshawn Davis left the Roughriders as a free agent to sign with the B.C. Lions on Wednesday.

Davis played 18 regular-season games with Saskatchewan last season, recording seven tackles and nine special-teams stops.

Prior to joining the Roughriders, Davis played 22 games over three seasons with B.C.

Seven players who were with the Roughriders last season — receivers Emmanuel Arceneaux, Naaman Roosevelt and Cory Watson, linebackers Brandyn Bartlett and Sam Hurl, offensive lineman Thaddeus Coleman and defensive lineman Lavar Edwards — remain on the free-agent market.
