“This has been our best year”: 21st annual Monty Funspiel raises money for foundation

Feb 2, 2020 | 12:40 PM

The 21st annual Monty Funspiel had a large turnout at the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Centre on Saturday.

Each year the community comes together to take part in a friendly bonspiel to raise money for the Mont St. Joseph Foundation.

Resource development coordinator for the foundation, Jessica Gale, said each year they pick a type of medical equipment to raise money for.

“This year’s goal was to raise $40,000 towards a bladder scanner for our nursing staff,” Gale said. “It’s a key fundraiser for our foundation because all of the money we raise goes to benefit the home in one way or another.”

She added the community support has been phenomenal and although they won’t know how much is raised until next week Gale thinks they’ll be close to the total.

“The amount of fun everyone’s having is bar none, it’s a huge family event, which is indicative of what our home is,” she said. “Our home is a home, so the families are always welcome, and it speaks to that with all the excitement and the fun and encouragement we got here today.

“As soon as you mention it in the community people are already knowing what you are talking about,” Gale added.

This year 32 teams entered the Monty Funspiel and were split into three different categories: beginner, intermediate and advanced.

The event brought out people of all ages including a seven-year old and an 88-year old to name a few.

There were also 32 sponsors; the Prince Albert Cosmopolitan Club was the events platinum sponsor and they donated $5,000 to the cause.

Foundation Chairperson Glenn McMullen said it’s important to do this event, so the public knows the Mont St. Joseph exists and they want people to have fun while they’re contributing to a fundraiser.

“This has been our best year; we have a maximum 32 teams and that’s about as many as we can handle in the curling rink,” he said. “[The bladder scanner’s] really important to the residents of Mont St. Joseph because it’s totally noninvasive.”

Last year they raised $36,000 and McMullen said they hope to reach their goal this year.
