Drivers urged to take note as kids head back to school

Class is back in session after winter break.

As students return to school, CAA Saskatchewan is reminding drivers to obey posted speed limits and driving to weather conditions.

The organization also advises pedestrians to be mindful at crosswalks and to not look down at their phones while crossing the street.

Prince Albert city councillor for ward six, Blake Edwards, said drivers should be careful to watch how fast they are travelling through school zones. He added it is important for people to be careful at other times besides pick up and drop off.

“During recess time I think is important, when the possible balls bounce over the fences and they’re out digging for it across the road,” he said.

Edwards said drivers need to be cautious in areas like the one around Ecole Holy Cross, where there are no signs posted limiting drivers to 30 kilometers.

“Even if it’s not zoned as a school zone, drivers still need to take that caution and be careful,” he said.

Edwards said he hasn’t heard a lot of complaints about speeding in school zones, adding speed bumps have helped in some cases.

“I think those are a big positive for the city of P.A.,” he said.

From September to December, Prince Albert Police have issued nearly 200 tickets to drivers for speeding in school zones.
