Sports Year in Review; Hero Hannoun’s goal wins it for the Raiders

Jan 1, 2020 | 12:00 PM

The Prince Albert Raiders winning the 2019 Western Hockey League championship makes the Top Sports Stories for 2019.

Dante Hannoun will forever go down in history as the hero for the Raiders, scoring the overtime-winning goal in Game seven to secure the championship over the Vancouver Giants, May 13 at the Art Hauser Centre.

Max Martin kept the puck in at the blueline and fired it wide of the net. Noah Gregor picked up on the far boards, circled around the net and found Hannoun alone in front of the net for the historic goal.

Also going down in history was Raiders general manager Curtis Hunt, who has now won a championship ring with the Raiders as both a player and an executive. Hunt was on the 1984-85 Raiders that won the franchise’s first ever league title, as well as the Memorial Cup that season.

On the Ed Chynoweth Cup, the Raiders made sure to include the names of Adam Herold, who was a Raider prospect when he perished in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash on April 6, 2018, and Ron Gunville, who lost his battle to cancer on Dec. 11, 2018. They also made sure the Raiders community was represented on the cup as well.

Relive one of the best moments in Raiders’ history right here.

Here’s a special piece on Hannoun, as well.
