It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David Kohut, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
David was born in the Rabbit Lake District in October, 1927 to Theodore and Margaret Kohut. He was the second oldest of five children. As a child he attended Rothmere School. At the age of 19 David worked in the Coal Mine in Cadomin AB., as a miner and a mechanic. In 1947 he journeyed on to Hay River, N.W.T and worked on the McKenzie Highway. He returned back to the Rabbit Lake area a couple years later. In 1950, David married Wilma McCuddin and they started their farm on the quarter south of David's parent's homestead. Together David and Wilma raised their three children, Rosemarie, Kathy and Eugene.
David loved old time music and mastered playing the accordion and fiddle. In his younger years, many a Saturday nights were spent playing for dances at Shady Bay, Aumacks, or the Legion in Spiritwood. In later years David also liked to pick a few tunes on his steel guitar. David loved outdoors and his farm. His hours were spent on the farm working the land and an occasional fishing trip was taken to the lake a few miles away. As David grew older, he left the farm less and less. Checking the cattle was an everyday event, with his side by side and his best friend Sheba, his dog riding in the passenger seat.
Weekends and holidays would bring David up to his sons home to take the great grandchildren for rides on his side by side. They checked cattle, horses and just rode up and down the field. These rides usually always included a stop at his house for a small treat for the kids.
David farmed side by side with his son Eugene for the last 40 years, on the same farm he and Wilma started back in the 50's. David actively, until about 8 months ago, when his cancer weakened him to the extent that he was no longer able to do the things he loved.
David passed away peacefully at Spiritwood Health Complex with his three children by his side, on December 26th, 2012 at the age of 85 years.
David will be greatly missed by his family.
At David's request there will not be a funeral service.
