Security tight as Stanley prelims begin today

Apr 3, 2017 | 10:02 AM

Security is tight as Battleford RCMP have halted traffic within two blocks of the North Battleford Provincial Court House this morning as the preliminary hearing into the shooting death of 22-year-old Colten Boushie begins.

The case has polarized the province and has drawn national attention as 55-year-old Gerald Stanley faces a second-degree murder charge relating to the Aug. 9, 2016,  shooting which occurred on Stanley’s farm near Biggar.

Metal detectors and searches are being conducted on anyone entering the court room.

During the preliminary hearing, the judge will determine whether there is sufficient evidence to proceed to trial. If there is enough evidence, the trial would then likely be set for Court of Queen’s Bench.
