AccuWeather predicts a blustery start to winter season

If you were hoping for a warmer winter, it appears you’re out of luck.

AccuWeather, a forecasting service based out of the U.S. predicts the northeast can expect high winds, a regular amount of snow and slightly below temperatures, averaged across the winter months.

The region can expect a quick start to winter weather.

“The bulk of…snowfall is going to be coming in December and into early January,” Brett Anderson, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather said. “I think November is also going to be a fairly snowy month compared to the normal in your area, but as we trend towards the second half of winter, things start to dry out.”

Anderson said Saskatchewan can expect colder averages, compared to the rest of the country.

“We think the main source of cold air going to be directed right across Northern Saskatchewan down through Manitoba into Northwest Ontario for the winter as a whole,” he said. “The core of the cold is going to be across the central and eastern portion of the Prairie region.”

Anderson explained that their forecasts are the result of 30-year weather averages, computer models, ocean currents and weather analogs.

The predictions aren’t an exact science though.

“They are better than the flip of a coin, better than 55 to 60 per cent on average,” Anderson told paNOW.

According to Anderson, AccuWeather has been predicting winter weather in Canada since the late 1990s into the early 2000s.
