Slow start to harvest: Crop Report

High moisture levels and cooler weather have kept farmers in the north and central regions out of the field.

A measly one per cent of the crop has been combined so far in the northeast, down from the five-year average of four per cent. The northwest is not fairing better, having less than one per cent off the field, down from the five-year average of three per cent. West and east central regions have three and two percent combined respectively.

With southern regions boosting the average, around the province, producers have combined six per cent of the crop, which is up two per cent from last week, but well behind the five-year average of 16 per cent.

Provincially, eight per cent of the crops are swathed or ready to straight cut which also falls behind the five-year average of 19 per cent.

Rainfall covered a significant portion of the province this week. Provincially, topsoil moisture on cropland is rated as seven per cent surplus, 78 per cent adequate, 12 per cent short and three per cent very short. Topsoil moisture on hay land and pasture is rated as two per cent surplus, 74 per cent adequate, 21 per cent short and three per cent very short.

In the northeast, topsoil moisture is rated as 13 per cent surplus, 81 per cent adequate and six per cent short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 12 per cent surplus, 80 per cent adequate, seven per cent short and one per cent very short.

In the northwest, topsoil moisture is rated as one per cent surplus, 86 per cent adequate and 13 per cent short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 82 per cent adequate and 18 per cent short.

Some producers indicated strong winds and hail as sources of crop damage this week.
