Prince Albert Scouts alive and well

This past spring, Scouts from Prince Albert went up to Anglin Lake where they did a lot of the typical stuff you expect with Scouts: woodworking, building fires, camp skills, those sort of things.

While trying to add more interest into the program though, they’ve started to try and add programs based on the kid’s interests. Since Groves himself is a wood carver and teaches wood working in schools, he helped the older age groups get their knife licenses to try their hands at whittling. 

“They really liked the idea of whittling, so we made some cowboy boots,” Groves continued, “I know the safety rules, and then Scouts Canada, they have a guide for what the kids need to learn about safety and knives and sharpening and all that kind of stuff before we can get into the actual handling of the knife. But yeah, they really enjoyed the whittling.” 

With Prince Albert’s location on the river and in the forest, the set up for scouts in Prince Albert is nearly perfect. At the earlier mentioned Camp Gilwell where the Scouts have had some of their activities, they’re actively working to finish repairs on some of the existing infrastructure. 

“We’ve insulated the shed, put a new roof on the shed. We’re getting a compostable toilet out there and just trying to make a space for our scouts and our cubs to be outdoors. We’ve done investiture out there. We do our year end out there and with the scouts we spend a little bit more time up there than the cubs and the beavers, but definitely in that boreal fringe there’s lots of opportunities to access nature with kids.” 

Funds raised by helping with the parking lot at the Prince Albert Exhibition will be going towards those repairs. 

“The more kids we get, the more parents we get, the bigger this will grow, the cooler program we can make.”
