Predators take series in Winnipeg, lock up first place for fourth consecutive season

The Prince Albert Predators returned home from their out-of-province weekend trip with two more tallies in the win column.

The Junior B lacrosse club made its inaugural trip to Winnipeg for a three-game series against the Blizzard, where they won their doubleheader on Saturday but dropped the one and only follow-up contest on Sunday.

The two wins, though, were enough for the team to capture its fourth consecutive Prairie Gold Lacrosse League (PGLL) regular season title, which also grants them the first seed in the playoffs.

“They’ve created a culture where losing is unacceptable,” said Predators head coach Lucas Wells, speaking to the legacy the team has built over the last few seasons. “It comes back to the guys’ hard work that has been there for the last five years. Understanding that coming up short in 2022 and not wanting to have that feeling again, just forcing teams to play to our level and taking advantage of every situation we can. I’m very proud of our guys.”

Saturday was a success inside Winnipeg’s Notre Dame Recreation Association Rink as the Preds took the first game 12-8 and game two 14-11, before the Blizzard avoided the sweep on Sunday with a 10-7 triumph.

Wells said the bounces weren’t going their way in game three.

“We went down short-staffed, so we just didn’t have enough legs and just couldn’t put the ball in the net. We had a 5-minute five-on-three and just couldn’t score. That’s just the way it works some days.”

P.A. was in the driver’s seat throughout game one on Saturday and led by as much as five in the third period. Winnipeg managed to narrow that deficit down to two, however. Two goals from the Preds in the final four minutes – just 30 seconds apart – sealed the deal and the 12-8 win for the Blue and Gold.

Game two later that night was much of the same story. The Predators jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first before Winnipeg closed the gap to just one goal. That one goal was as close as the Blizzard would get to tasting victory as they trailed by two or more goals for the rest of the contest, with the game eventually ending 14-11

Sunday began the same way as the other two with the Preds getting out to a 4-3 lead. Only this time, Winnipeg managed to tie and took a 5-4 lead late in the second to go up heading into the third. There, the Blizzard added two more goals to take a three-goal lead and managed to hold the edge for the remainder of the game, even going up by four late in the third. Matthew Cudmore added the final tally for P.A. while on the power play at the three-minute mark to make the final score 10-7

With the weekend being Prince Albert’s first trip to Winnipeg to play the Blizzard, Wells said that the Notre Dame Recreation Association Rink, compared to the Kinsmen Arena, had a lot to be desired.

“Nothing compares to the Kinsmen.”

“[Their arena] was less pressure-packed than I thought it was going to be. The environment, to be very frank with you, there wasn’t much of one. The fans were good, I mean, it wasn’t overly loud but all in all it was a good experience.”

Prince Albert has two more games on the schedule before the postseason, which includes a trip to Moose Jaw on June 20 and another to Weyburn on June 21. Playoffs are slated to begin in early July.

Outlaws skid reaches five games

The Prince Albert Outlaws’ slump continued over the weekend, following a 17-5 loss to the league-best Brewers on Sunday in Saskatoon.

The loss marks the fifth straight for P.A.’s senior lacrosse team, dating back to May 30. Two of those losses came via forfeit when the ‘laws surrendered games against Regina and Moose Jaw on June 6 and June 7.

Now sitting at 1-7-0 (W-L-T) on the year, the Outlaws have just one game left in the season which is slated for June 19 at the Kinsmen Arena in P.A. against the Saskatoon Swat.
