Jun 3, 2026 | 1:30 PM

Sources close to Monday’s fatal shooting incident at Pelican Narrows, confirmed to paNOW that 28-year-old Kianna Josie Custer was the woman who was found deceased after being reportedly shot multiple times in the chest.

The other victim, a man, was reportedly shot in the thigh. Police have not confirmed the identity of either victims, but did say Wednesday afternoon that the injuries of the man who was taken to hospital are now considered non-life-threatening.

RCMP also released more details into the events of June 1 that initially prompted an active shooter alert in the community. Police said a fight started at a residence in Pelican Narrows amongst people known to each other.

Custer was killed inside a home on Chachakew Street, and the man was injured minutes later on a road that is near the local health clinic.

Initially, Saskatchewan RCMP issued a dangerous person alert in relation to this incident because information indicated it occurred at the clinic, and it was possibly random in nature. Investigators confirmed the altercation did not occur in the clinic and there is not believed to be a risk of imminent danger to the public.

One person was taken into custody but was later released without charges.

On Wednesday, RCMP released a video of their suspect in hopes the public can help identify who the shooter is.

The suspect is a man wearing all black, carrying a handgun and a cell phone.

“We know the community of Pelican Narrows is on edge because of this shooting, and other recent violent events,” said Insp. Ashley St. Germaine, acting officer in charge of Saskatchewan RCMP’s Major Crimes Branch.

“Our number one priority right now is the safety of Pelican Narrows residents. Homicides are solved with the help of witnesses. We know there are people in the community who have information and have not shared it with police. If you do – or if you recognize the suspect in this video – please call police or report what you know to Crime Stoppers immediately. Help us bring this person into custody, ease community fears, and start the justice process for those affected by this crime.”

Investigators will remain in the community as the investigation unfolds.

No other incidents have been reported that are connected to the June 1 shooting. A previous homicide on May 28 led to Brett McCallum, 31, being charged with the second-degree murder of 26-year-old Jaden Custer.

While RCMP have not confirmed a motive behind the June 1 shooting, local residents in the community told paNOW they believe the incident is gang related.

On Wednesday, leadership at Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation were expected to hold a press conference in relation to the violence in Pelican Narrows. paNOW will have details later today.
