Predators continue winning ways as Outlaws fumble in season openers

May 5, 2026 | 11:47 AM

The Prairie Gold Lacrosse League (PGLL) is off and running on another season.

Both of the city’s junior and senior teams embarked on their regular seasons over the weekend, with either game coming at Kinsmen Arena.

The Prince Albert Outlaws kicked off lacrosse season on Saturday in their first game in nearly two years, after sitting out from league play last season. In their lone weekend contest, the ‘laws got off on the wrong foot as the Saskatoon Brewers improved to 3-0-0 (W-L-T) already on the year with a 14-2 win in P.A.

Brody Holizki and Sawyer Elphinstone each had a goal and an assist for the Outlaws in the loss as Carson Remy and J.R. McCloy also tallied assists. The Outlaws return to the floor this weekend for a Mother’s Day matinee against the Winnipeg Blizzard, with opening faceoff set for 2 p.m. at the Kinsmen Arena.

Meanwhile, the Prince Albert Predators picked up from where they left off last season and won their regular season opener on Sunday afternoon.

The Preds welcomed the Moose Jaw Mustangs to town for a rematch of last year’s finals which came in the same result, a P.A. win in 15-10 fashion. The win continues an incredible streak for the Predators that dates back to May 13, 2023, the last time the team lost a game where since then, the Blue and Gold are 42-0-2, which includes regular season, provincial playoff, and MacDonald Cup games.

Despite the Mustangs getting on the board first, the Preds bounced back and went on a run that gave them a 7-1 lead in the second period at one point. Following that same frame, the Predators led 12-4 where Moose Jaw then began mounting a comeback.

Slowly but surely, the visitors clawed their way back but they eventually ran out of time, as Ryder Gilroy scored the team’s tenth and final goal of the contest to end the game at 15-10.

League veteran Matthew Cudmore led the club on the scoresheet behind his eight-point performance with three goals and five assists. Cole Barmby wasn’t too far behind with five points, followed by Ryley Prediger, Chase Lehner, and Talon Sandry with four each, Tucker Proedahl and Braden Shewchuk both with three, and several other who record one or two points in the win. Netminder Oliver Volek turned aside 43 shots to collect his first win of the season.

The Preds now gear up for Saturday when they host the Swift Current Wolverines for their first back-to-back gameday of the season. Game 1 of the weekend begins at 2 p.m., while the rematch is slated for later that night at 7 p.m. Either will be played at the Kinsmen Arena.
