A man responsible for a large grass fire north of Prince Albert, has received a three-month jail sentence.

However as a result of remand credit, he will be released from custody on Monday.

Larry Bird, 35, appeared by video from the Prince Albert Correctional Centre when his case was discussed Monday afternoon at provincial court.

On Sept 3, 2025, at around 2:30 p.m., Prince Albert RCMP were notified by Buckland Fire and Rescue of a large grass fire burning along Highway 2, roughly five kilometers north of the city.

Initial reports signaled the fire may have been intentionally set, and following their investigation, officers confirmed the blaze was human-caused. The fire was extinguished by on-scene firefighters before police arrived.

A short time later, police arrested Bird near the scene and charged him with arson (damage to property).

Monday’s sentence represented a joint submission from lawyers and was accepted by Judge Wiebe.

Crown Prosecutor Kristen Hubbard stated Bird has 30 prior convictions for property related offences, including two for arson.

Bird’s legal aid lawyer Ian Goldberg explained Bird suffers from a cognitive disability and is receiving treatment for addictions.

Bird’s actual time in custody amounted to over 170 days.
