PAMBA seeking umpires for busy upcoming season as first pitch looms

Apr 14, 2026 | 2:37 PM

The Prince Albert Minor Baseball Association (PAMBA) is putting out the call for umpires ahead of the 2026 season.

With multiple Western Canadian Baseball Championship tournaments coming to the city later this summer, the association currently has 19 officials registered but would like to see closer to 30 for availability purposes as first pitch on the new season is fast approaching.

Heather Bourdon, umpire coordinator for PAMBA, explained that those interested need to be 12-and-up, and don’t need to have prior experience in the sport.

“Umpiring allows you to actively stay involved in baseball games without having to play,” she said in an email. “It builds confidence, leadership, and communication skills that transfer well into everyday life. It’s a great way to meet people and be involved in the community.”

“Overall, I think becoming an umpire is a fun and rewarding experience,” she continued. “It helps build confidence, leadership and decision-making skills that are extremely useful in everyday life. It’s a great way to meet people and stay active in the community.

Umps are paid $40 per game at the U11 level and up to $60 per game for U18.

An in-person clinic is slated for this coming weekend on Sunday, April 19th at St. Mary High School. A Level 1 clinic for first year umpires will be at 9 a.m., while a Level 2 clinic for more experienced umps will be at 1:30 p.m. Attendees will be reimbursed for all training fees after they ump their first game with PAMBA.

Bourdon said the clinics are a very hands-on learning experience.

“Umpires receive excellent support as they get started. They will attend a three-hour in-person clinic, led by a high-performance instructor providing a solid foundation for the rules, mechanics and game management. They will also complete an online training course which is very informative. There are always experienced umps available for questions and support during games.”

Those wanting to attend an umping clinic can do so by visiting the BaseballSask website or by emailing PAMBA at umpire@paminorbaseball.com.
