Excitement growing, plans underway as PA Minor Baseball gears up for historic summer

This baseball season in Prince Albert will be the most important one in its history.

This summer will see not one, not two, but three different Western Canadian Baseball Championships come to the city, including the 13U, 15U and 18U tournaments.

Prince Albert Minor Baseball President Nathan Noble said there’s minimal work that needs to be done in the spring and throughout the baseball season before Western’s takes over in August.

“No real upgrades are needed. All of our facilities are well up to grade, ready for Western’s. So as far as the work that we want to do on them, it’s more just about cleaning them up, making sure the mounds are in good shape, infields in good shape, grass is growing green, all those kinds of simple things.”

The 13U and 15U tournaments will be played at Crescent Acres Park while the 18U’s will be at Andy Zwack Field within Prime Ministers Park. He added that some of the work has already been completed at those facilities.

“We’ve had a pitch count added on the scoreboard at Andy Zwack and we’ve done some kind of cleanup of the facility. We’ve added fencing and we’ve got a portable bathroom system coming in for the summer this year with Westerns and everything.”

Teams have yet to be picked for the season with AA tryouts slated for mid-March. Noble noted that there will most likely be more Prince Albert-based teams at the AA level this year as registration numbers have seen a big uptick.

“I think one thing we’ve noticed in the last couple of years is the competitive level of our kids has risen. Our numbers are up and with it comes better players, better coaching. We’re going to have two AA teams competing at probably all of our age groups with the potential for third teams. Our numbers are really strong this year.”

He continued that the Association has been holding camps over the course of the winter at Dave Stuart Arena and at the Alfred Jenkins Fieldhouse with attendance hovering near triple digits at every camp, adding the kids are eager to get started on the new season.

“They’re very excited, probably a little nervous at the same time knowing that opportunity is on the line.”

Recently, BaseballSask put out a call to communities around the province in search of hosts for provincial tournaments. Noble said the board is hopeful to bring a championship to PA once teams are finalized following tryouts.

Those provincial tournaments are scheduled to be held in July.
