Ahtahkakoop Health Centre gets federal funding boost for health and safety plan

Feb 19, 2026 | 10:48 AM

Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation will get an extra $2 million to help its health centre manage an ongoing issue with substance abuse and overdoses.

The new money will be added to previously announced funding for a total of $3.1 million, according to a news release issued several days ago.

“If we want a stronger Canada—one where people in every community can live healthier and safer lives—we need to tackle the illegal drug crisis together. That means giving communities the support they need to care for their people in ways that truly reflect their realities. The organizations receiving funding are offering urgent health services, social supports, and culturally grounded programs that are making a real difference and saving lives every day,” said Marjorie Michel, Minister of Health

The money will help implement a Community Health and Safety Initiative and provide naloxone training and distribution, family-focused education and support, and youth engagement programs.
