Raiders start Alberta road trip with a win in Lethbridge

Heading out to Alberta for two games on the weekend, the Prince Albert Raiders started the road trip looking for their second win in a row when they took on the Lethbridge Hurricanes. With 17-year-old Steele Bass in net, the Raiders didn’t play their best game overall but Bass was strong and helped them to a 3-1 win.

The Raiders first period was their strongest, and they found the back of the net just 5:07 into the period. Linden Burrett and Max Heise each earned assists as they helped get the puck to Jonah Sivertson on the left wall. Sivertson then moved up to the left point, along the blueline, and to the right wall hashmarks where he then fired a shot on goal that looked like it was intended to draw a rebound, but instead snuck through the fivehole of Koen Cleaver and Sivertson had his 14th of the season.

Then at 12:51, the Hurricanes were trying to clear the puck out on the left wall, but Daxon Rudolph stepped up and held the puck in with a quick pass to the corner for Alisher Sarkenov. He curled from the corner out to the faceoff dot, then sent a picture perfect wrist shot under the bar for his ninth of the season.

After 1: Raiders 2 – 0 Hurricanes, shots 14-5 Raiders

The second period was a slow one. The Raiders only generated four shots the entire period, their lowest shot total of the season.

In the final minute of the period, Max Heise went to the box for a double minor for both crosschecking and roughing. He took Owen Berge to the box with him for roughing, meaning the Hurricanes had a powerplay to start the third period.

After 2: Raiders 2 – 0 Hurricanes, shots 8-4 Hurricanes, 18-13 Raiders overall

The Hurricanes scored on that powerplay 1:00 into the period. Easton Daneault helped work the puck off the wall for Kyle Heger at the right point, and Heger fired a onetimer through traffic that got by Bass to cut the lead in half.

The Raiders only needed another 1:11 to retake their two goal lead. At 2:11, Aiden Oiring was battling for a faceoff and Brayden Dube helped get the puck loose for Brandon Gorzynski in the slot. Gorzynski’s first shot came off the pad like a pass to himself, and he tucked it in around the goaltender for his 18th of the year.

FINAL: Raiders 3 – 1 Hurricanes, shots 11-6 Raiders, 29-19 Raiders overall

With 18 saves on 19 shots, Steele Bass improved his record to a perfect 6-0-0 in his first year in the WHL. On the night, he had a 0.947 save percentage.

Aiden Oiring’s assist on the third Raiders goal extends his point streak to nine games. In that time, Oiring has 4G-11A.

Linden Burrett’s streak of points in the last three games is the only other that survived the night. He now has 1G-3A in the last three games.

For the first time this season, the Raiders were held without a powerplay the entire game. They were supposed to get one in the third on an interference call, but during the delayed penalty Matyas Man played the puck over the glass and received a delay of game penalty.

The Raiders will head to Medicine Hat on Saturday for their third meeting of the season against the league leading Medicine Hat Tigers.
